Traveling as a college student can be an exciting, eye-opening experience, but it's important to prioritize your safety and security while abroad.

Travel Safety Tips and Planning

  • Make sure to do thorough research about your destination. Read up on local customs, laws, and common safety issues. Some countries may have specific cultural norms regarding behavior, dress, or interactions that you should be aware of to avoid unintentionally offending someone or getting into trouble.

  • Use online resources such as travel blogs, and safety advisories from your government (e.g., the U.S. State Department), and review websites like TripAdvisor to find out what to expect in your destination.

  • Common scam information is available throughout the internet for most destinations.  They will tell you what to look for and what/who/where to stay away from.

  • Although it is very unlikely you will need it, it is important to know where the embassy is located.  They can help you with passport issues and other safety concerns. 

  • Familiarize yourself with emergency numbers in the country you're visiting, such as police, medical, and fire services. Many countries have different emergency numbers, so it’s crucial to know them in case of an emergency.

  • Take clear photos of your passport, visa, and any documents you need, and store them in a secure cloud storage service (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox). This can be incredibly helpful if you lose anything during your trip.

  • When you arrive at your destination, ask trusted locals—hotel staff, fellow travelers, or shopkeepers—about areas you should avoid. They will often have up-to-date advice on which neighborhoods are unsafe and which transportation options are the safest.

  • Use reliable public transportation systems or apps like Uber and Lyft, which are often safer than hailing a random cab. Many cities also have safe late-night ride-sharing services, which can be a better option than walking or taking public transit at night.

Traveling Solo

There are many safe countries around the world. If you’re looking for somewhere to ‘start,’ the countries below have excellent safety ratings. However, always research specific destinations within these countries and practice general safety precautions while traveling.

Gadventures and Intrepid Travel have small group trips that are called “Solo-ish” trips. (See Small Group Travel) You go alone but are in the safety and guidance of experienced travel companies. Here you can meet other solo travelers and like-minded people.
